Originally a thriving farmland community, Upper and Lower Grulin townships where deserted after the 1847 potato famine when many occupants moved to Canada. A strong sense of a sad history emanates from the ruined croft houses huddling amongst the massive pitchstone boulders below the spectacular south facing Sgurr cliffs. There are good views to the Isle of Muck, and on a good day, Coll and Tiree. Golden eagles can often be spotted at Grulin.
The Massacre and Cathedral Caves are 30 minutes walk from the Pier. Eigg has a number of caves dotted around its craggy coast, but none more infamous than The Massacre Cave: In 1577, the entire population of Eigg, save for one old woman, was suffocated to death as they hid in this cave from the McLeod’s of Skye who were perusing a vendetta. They followed footprints in the freshly fallen snow to the cave’s entrance and set a fire, killing all 395 Macdonald’s inside.
